Which NFL Teams Have Won the Most Super Bowls?

The Pittsburgh Steelers and New England Patriots are tied for the most Super Bowl wins with six each. The San Francisco 49ers and Dallas Cowboys are next with five apiece. Twenty of the NFL's 32 franchises have won at least one Super Bowl through Super Bowl LX in February 2026.

The raw title count is only half the story, though. Pittsburgh got its six in eight tries; New England needed twelve. Below is the full table of every franchise with a championship, with appearances and win-loss records, followed by what those numbers actually tell you.

Sorted by titles, then by Super Bowl winning percentage. The "years won" column lists NFL seasons, not the calendar year the game was played, so Seattle's 2025 title is Super Bowl LX in February 2026.

The Tie at Six: Steelers and Patriots

Pittsburgh got there first and did it in half the time. Chuck Noll's Steelers won four in six seasons between the 1974 and 1979 seasons, a run built on the Steel Curtain defense, Terry Bradshaw, Franco Harris and a 1974 draft class that produced four Hall of Famers. Bill Cowher and Mike Tomlin added two more in the 2005 and 2008 seasons, giving Pittsburgh six titles across three head coaches and 35 seasons.

New England's six all came in an 18-season window under Bill Belichick and Tom Brady, from the 2001 season through 2018. That is the most concentrated title run in NFL history and it is why the Patriots also hold the appearance record.

The tiebreaker most fans reach for is efficiency, and there Pittsburgh wins comfortably. The Steelers are 6-2 in Super Bowls. The Patriots are 6-6, having lost twice to the Giants (Super Bowls XLII and XLVI), once each to the Bears, Packers and Eagles, and most recently to Seattle in Super Bowl LX. That last one made New England the first franchise ever to lose six Super Bowls, an odd distinction to hold alongside a share of the win record.

Whichever franchise gets to seven first breaks a tie that has stood since February 2019. Both teams are in the mix again, and Kansas City, on four, is the closest active challenger.

Five Each: 49ers and Cowboys

Dallas and San Francisco are both 5-3 in Super Bowls, both with eight appearances, and both built their runs on a coach-quarterback pairing that defined a decade.

The Cowboys won Super Bowl VI and Super Bowl XII under Tom Landry, then three more in four seasons in the 1990s with Troy Aikman, Emmitt Smith and Michael Irvin, under Jimmy Johnson and then Barry Switzer. Dallas has not been back to a Super Bowl since winning Super Bowl XXX after the 1995 season, the longest gap of any franchise with five titles.

San Francisco won four in the 1980s with Bill Walsh and Joe Montana, then a fifth after the 1994 season with Steve Young throwing six touchdown passes in Super Bowl XXIX. The 49ers have been back three times since and lost all three: Super Bowl XLVII to Baltimore, Super Bowl LIV to Kansas City, and Super Bowl LVIII to Kansas City again in overtime.

The Perfect Records

Four franchises have never lost a Super Bowl:

TeamRecordTitles
Baltimore Ravens2-0Super Bowls XXXV, XLVII
Tampa Bay Buccaneers2-0Super Bowls XXXVII, LV
New York Jets1-0Super Bowl III
New Orleans Saints1-0Super Bowl XLIV

The Ravens and Buccaneers are the only teams with multiple appearances and no losses. The Jets' perfect record is the strangest entry on the list: their single appearance was Joe Namath's guaranteed upset of the Baltimore Colts in January 1969, and they have not returned in the 57 seasons since. That is the longest active Super Bowl drought for any franchise that has actually won one, a gap tracked in Every NFL Team's Championship Drought, Ranked.

Two of these four wins were also significant upsets in their own right, which is why the Jets and Buccaneers turn up in The 10 Biggest Upsets in Super Bowl History.

Appearance Leaders vs. Win Leaders

Getting there and winning are different skills, and the two lists do not match.

New England Patriots126-6
Pittsburgh Steelers86-2
Dallas Cowboys85-3
San Francisco 49ers85-3
Denver Broncos83-5
Kansas City Chiefs74-3

New England's 12 appearances are four clear of the next group. Four franchises are tied at eight, and Denver is the odd one out among them: the Broncos have as many Super Bowl trips as Pittsburgh but half as many wins, and their 3-5 record is the worst of any team with a title. Denver lost its first four Super Bowls, by a combined score of 163-50, before John Elway finally won two in a row after the 1997 and 1998 seasons.

Below the winners' list, two teams have four appearances and nothing to show: the Buffalo Bills and Minnesota Vikings are both 0-4. Along with 10 other franchises they make up the group covered in Which NFL Teams Have Never Won a Super Bowl?.

A Note on Repeats

Eight franchises have won back-to-back Super Bowls: Green Bay (I and II), Miami (VII and VIII), Pittsburgh (IX and X, then XIII and XIV), San Francisco (XXIII and XXIV), Dallas (XXVII and XXVIII), Denver (XXXII and XXXIII), New England (XXXVIII and XXXIX) and Kansas City (LVII and LVIII).

No team has ever won three straight. Kansas City came the closest, reaching Super Bowl LIX after back-to-back titles and losing 40-22 to Philadelphia. Seattle is the next franchise with a chance, entering the 2026 season as the defending champion. The coaching records behind these runs are broken out in Which NFL Coaches Have Won the Most Super Bowls, and the individual game honors in Every Super Bowl MVP Winner in NFL History.
